Frequently Asked Questions about our culinary walks

Why is Bruges known as a chocolate city?

Bruges is known as a chocolate city thanks to its long tradition of chocolate craftsmanship and the exceptionally high concentration of artisan chocolatiers in the historic city centre. Since the 17th century, Bruges has played an important role as a trading hub for the import and processing of cocoa. Over the centuries, Bruges chocolatiers have passed down their skills and recipes from generation to generation.

Today, the city boasts a guild of chocolatiers, its own signature praline (the Bruges Swan), and a dedicated chocolate museum — all of which contribute to Bruges’ strong international reputation as a true chocolate city.

This culinary walk focuses exclusively on small tastings. At several stops, you’ll sample artisanal chocolate, sweet treats and occasionally a drink — without ever receiving a full meal. This keeps the walk light, varied and enjoyable.

Yes. Because the walk is based on small tastings, it’s ideal for anyone who wants to discover different flavours without eating heavily. The focus is on experience, flavours and stories — not on large portions.

Bruges is home to dozens of chocolate shops, but the most renowned artisan chocolatiers who have shaped the city’s international reputation are Dominique Persoone, Pol Depla and the family behind Chocolatier Dumon. Each of them is known for a distinctive style, ranging from rock‑’n‑roll creations to decades‑old family traditions.

The chocolate “Bruges Swan” (officially: the Brugsch Swaentje) was not invented by one specific person. It was created in 2006 as the collective result of a competition and the Guild of Bruges Chocolatiers.

Local chocolatiers were invited to submit their own recipes, after which the people of Bruges selected the winning — and most delicious — creation through a public tasting.

This is the official, exclusive city chocolate of Bruges. It is a sustainable fair‑trade brand jointly developed by the Guild of Bruges Chocolatiers to promote the city’s chocolate craftsmanship.
