Back in 2006, Geert and Kurt, two certified city guides from Bruges, joined forces with a shared vision. They set out to break free from the conventional city tour and offer something different. For the first time, visitors could discover much more than the familiar landmarks between the Minnewater and the Market Square. Their “Special Walks” (indeed, that’s where the name “S-WAN” comes from!) introduced a fresh approach to exploring Bruges, with surprising themed tours, hidden gems, and fascinating local stories for curious minds and adventurous walkers alike.
What began with a handful of guides and a limited offer gradually grew into the realisation of their dream. More and more guides joined S‑wan, drawn by the vision, the warm atmosphere, and the small‑scale character of the organisation.
With the support of several city services, the range of activities grew into a vibrant mix of walking and cycling tours in and around Bruges. Ten years later, the team had expanded to 35 enthusiastic guides. Today, S‑WAN proudly counts no fewer than 69 guides, all passionate about Bruges’ rich heritage and eager to share their love for the city with visitors from near and far.
Twenty years on, S‑WAN is still the young, energetic and refreshingly original organisation it has always been. Or, as we like to put it in international terms: “Guides with a Twist”.
And that anniversary year? We’d love to celebrate it together with you! Take a look at the annual programme below and feel warmly invited.
